rt for sandpaper. This article will show you how to make a sanding block using a 3″ x 21″ belt sander sand paper belt.

Typically I use a scrap block of wood in a pinch for small sanding operations, but when I know I’m going to do a lot of hand sanding I use my custom made block that is designed to use a 3″ x 21″ sanding belt. These are the belts that are used on belt sanders and come in many grits.
Fancier sanding blocks use clips, teeth or clamps to hold sand paper in place. these brands typically hold a quarter or half sheet of sandpaper.
My method of using a 3″ x 21″ sanding belt instead of the traditional 9 x 11 sand paper sheets allows me to attach my belt and sand away with out having to change or adjust anything. I can flip it over or rotate the sanding belt if I need fresh grit.
The best advantage of using a sanding belt is longevity, they last ten times longer, don’t rip or tear 
on sharp edges, and are able to be cleaned and reused.
How To Make A Sanding Belt Block:
- Measure the inside of a 3″ x 21″ sanding belt,
- Cut a 3″ wide piece of poplar to that length,
- Use a miter saw and clip both sides or both ends of the board
- Sand the 45 degree clips to a round and smooth end
- Test fit a 3″ x 21″ sanding belt ~ sand away
