Trac Seats Seat Suspension Kit is an easy-to-install, adjustable suspension system that can be installed under the seat of mowers, tractors, skid steers, forklifts and more to soften the ride for the operator. It is constructed from heavy-duty steel and relies on a mechanical spring-loaded mechanism. We were sent a Trac Seat to test and the results were stunning. Once the Trac Seats Suspension Kit was installed on a solid chassis Bad Boy zero-turn mower, the rigid ride completely changed and the mower suddenly felt as soft as a Cadilac.
Installation
The Trac Seats Suspension Kit is available for many different mowers and applications. It is highly recommended to measure your bolt pattern before placing your order to ensure the kit you order will fit. The Trac Seats Suspension Kit can be installed on almost any application. However, if the holes don’t line up, there is a large metal platform in which holes can be drilled for a custom application. Installation on this BadBoy Zero Turn took about 30 minutes and the holes lined up exactly so modification was unnecessary. A basic 1/2″ socket and wrench are all you need for installation, but having a set of ratcheting wrenches is very helpful.
To install the Trac Seats Suspension Kit you must first remove your seat and track system if your mower has one. Next, the suspension gets mounted on top of the mounting plate or track system, depending on what hardware your application has. The seat then gets mounted to the top of the suspension kit. Bolts and hardware are included.
Softer Ride
This zero-turn mower does not have an independent suspension system or a suspension seat, so the only relief from the bumps in the yard are the two springs on which the chair sits. The springs on this BadBoy are robust and provide a little more cushion than most older mowers with smaller springs. However, we found that there was plenty of room for improvement when we added the suspension system. Some high-end mowers come with full suspension and sometimes a suspension seat. When I learned that an affordable suspension kit could be added to a rigid frame mower, I knew that this was something that we had to check out.
Ride Height
It should be taken into consideration that the Trac Seats Suspension Kit itself will add about 3″ of height to your seat. This extra height will raise your center of gravity slightly. Being 6′ tall I was initially concerned about this extra height as I currently felt comfortable about my positioning on my mower. However, once the suspension was installed I was more interested in how cushiony the seat felt. It was completely worth sitting a little higher to feel like I was sitting on a pillow. I didn’t even notice the height difference after a few minutes on the machine. I felt that it was worth the trade-off.
Ride Adjustments
The Trac Seats Suspension Kit has an adjustable knob for spring adjustment. Conveniently, the knob pulls out from under the seat so adjustments can be made. After adjustments are made, the knob slides back under the seat so it is not in the way during use. This was pretty thoughtful as some seats will stick out further than others and concealing the adjuster knob will prevent it from snagging your pants.
I also tested the various settings and found that the medium setting was most comfortable for me, weighing in at about 200 pounds. When the setting was too soft I bounced around slightly too much, bottoming out at times. When the setting was too stiff, I felt that the ride was too hard and I wasn’t getting enough suspension. I found that a medium adjustment was the perfect setting for me. Adjustments will be user preference based on weight and comfort.
Testing
I mowed about 4 acres of grass with the Trac Seats Seat Suspension Kit. Although the grass may look nice, this is a new construction home with quickly spread topsoil. There are a lot of bumps and divots from when the top soil was spread. However, as soon as I sat on the suspension seat for the first time I was able to notice a big difference. The bumps I would feel with the zero-turn mower are much less with the Trac Seats Seat Suspension Kit installed. If you have back problems or just want a softer ride, there’s no doubt that this kit will help you reach your goals.
