Hud-Son HWB Box Wedge Wood Splitter Review

As part of our review of the Hud-Son HWB Box Wedge Wood Splitter, The Tool Lab crew decided to time how quickly they could split and stack 1/3 of a cord of wood. The total time? Just about 21 minutes and 27 seconds.

Wood Splitting 1/3 Cord For Time

This was with one person operating the splitter, one person feeding the rounds into the Hud-Son HWB Box Wedge Wood Splitter, and one person stacking the pieces into an IBC tote.

Whats an IBC Tote?

IBC totes are the big square steel cage baskets with a plastic bladder inside. A lot of businesses get them for transporting and storing chemicals. They’re common at mulch yards for the dye for making colored mulch. Firewood guys like them because you can remove the bladder from it and modify the cage a little bit to stack firewood easily. One of the big 300 gallon size ones holds almost exactly 1/3 of a cord of wood. 1/3 of a cord is commonly referred to as a face cord. It’s like a universal metric for firewood. They let sun and air get to the wood easily to help with drying time also

How’d It Do?

The crew worked quickly and efficiently, putting up an impressive time. This demonstrates that the HWB is capable of splitting roughly one full cord of firewood in an hour. Given its portability and versatility, that level of production really stood out to our test crew.

Hud-Son HWB Box Wedge Wood Splitter | Build Quality

Overall, the HWB is a rugged, versatile, and highly capable splitter. Our crew was particularly impressed by the box wedge design and the overall build quality of the machine. The craftsmanship that comes with American-made Hud-Son Forestry Equipment is evident throughout.

Pros | Cons

One feature that really caught our attention is the inclusion of auxiliary hydraulic lines right from the factory, designed for powering a hydraulic conveyor system. A conveyor can save a lot of time and effort when stacking large amounts of firewood.

One downside we encountered is that the Hud-Son HWB Box Wedge Wood Splitter generates a significant amount of waste. This is clearly visible in the video, especially when we’re filling the IBC totes. While some of this waste can be repurposed as kindling, the majority is just scrap that needs to be dealt with. This is a consideration for anyone looking to purchase a machine like this, but it’s important to note that this is a common issue with box-wedge splitters in general, not just the Hud-Son model.

Hud-Son HWB Box Wedge Wood Splitter Cost

A machine of this caliber doesn’t come cheap, with an MSRP of $9,795.00. However, it’s a solid investment, and the Hud-Son HWB Box Wedge Wood Splitter can pay for itself quickly. Just check your local Facebook Marketplace to see what a cord of wood is going for in your area—or check the price of firewood bundles at a nearby campground.
