DeWalt 20v Brushless Trimmer DCST920P1

DCST920P1 DeWalt 20v String Trimmer

Dewalt 20V XR Brushless 13″ String Trimmer (5.0Ah)

This is the first battery powered trimer I have ever used.  I’ve spent a brief period of time lugging around a long extension cord for a corded trimmer, most of my experience is with a gas powered trimmer. The DeWalt 20v String Trimmer can not be compared to a corded trimmer since it completely outperforms the corded version. When comparing the DCST920P1 to a gas powered trimmer, there are a few pro’s and con’s to consider.

Pro’s:

  • Lightweight
  • Well balanced
  • No fussing around trying to start it
  • Little to no maintenance needed
  • Quiet to run
  • Comes with a 5AH battery and charger
  • Ease of use: Anyone can operate the DCST92P1 String Trimmer

Cons:

  • Slightly less powerful than a gas powered trimmer
  • Single string coming out doesn’t allow for as fast of a cut
  • Best for someone who already has DeWalt 20v tools due to the battery
  • Could use a shoulder strap
  • A larger guard would be nice but every Landscaper I see has taken off the guard to help with spots.

Thoughts on Using the Trimmer:

The trimmer works exceptionally well. I immediately noticed how light weight [8,5 lbs] and comfortable the tool was to use.  It’s really quiet to operate and intuitive to operate.  The trimmer uses a standard bump feed to extend the trimmer string.

The variable speed trigger was useful around some delicate plantings I have.  A larger guard, shoulder strap and double string would be nice addition to future models.

  • Brushless motor which allows for more power and longer battery time

Summary

I may be a bit biased due to the fact that I am tired of my gas trimmer not starting, and because of how well my other DeWalt 20v tools have been performing. If you’re already using DeWalt’s 20v line of tools the DeWalt 20v String Trimmer Review is a great addition and a no brainer if you are in the market for a string trimmer.
