Snow and Ice Removal on Composite Decks
Removing Snow From Composite Decks
With winter upon us and snow and ice everywhere you should be aware how to properly remove snow and ice from a PVC or composite deck.
Many people go to the hardware store and buy anything in a bag that claims to melt snow and ice. The problem with that is that many of those chemicals can damage a PVC or composite deck.
The best option I know for removing snow and ice on a PVC or composite deck is a calcium chloride-based “ice melt.” These are the same products that are safe to use on blue stone, concrete and also nice to use if you have hardwood floors. Phrases like “safe for concrete”, “safe for blue or flag stone” and “will not kill grass” are a good indication.
Following these tips will help keep you safe, and your deck looking good. Have a safe and enjoyable winter!
Protect Your Composite Deck:
Avoid Ice Melt with a Color added:
Manufacturers claim this helps you see how much chemical you’ve spread. the problem is that these dyes can stain your composite decking.
Avoid Sand:
Traction on slippery surfaces is a plus and a huge safety factor but the sand grit will grind into the decking and damage its surface.
Avoid Metal Shovels or Shovels with Metal Cutting Edges:
Metal shovels and ice chipping tools will damage even the most resilient composite decking regardless of the manufacturers claims that it wont. Using such tools will void the warranty of the composite decking.
Avoid these Substances:
Abrasive compounds of acidic or basic pH, strong solvents, oil based paints or stains, and anything that will cause metallic rust .
