Jorgensen Corner Easing Plane Review

Jorgensen Corner Easing Plane (Model #70748)

The Jorgensen Corner Easing Plane has quickly become one of my favorite hand tools. My older go-to was the Rockler carbide-tipped easing plane, but they stopped making it and when I couldn’t find replacement blades, I searched around and found the Jorgensen for approximately $30 online.

The Jorgensen is a definite upgrade which is noticeable in every way—from build quality to performance.

Build Quality

Crafted from high-grade aluminum, this tool feels like a solid chunk of precision engineering. It weighs16 oz. which I found was heavy enough to offer momentum when cutting, without causing fatigue. Measuring 6 1⁄2″ long, 2 3⁄8″ tall, and 1″ wide, it strikes a perfect balance between portability and functionality.

The tool features a precisely machined body with a knurled adjustment wheel that provides smooth and accurate depth control. This adjustment mechanism, which uses a threaded screw and receiver built into each blade, allows for easy swapping and fine-tuning—a standout feature not commonly found in other corner planes.

Blades & Performance

the Jorgensen plane comes with four hardened O1 steel blades: three radius profiles (1⁄8″, 3⁄16″, and 1⁄4″) and one 45° chamfer cutter. All arrived sharp and ready to use—no honing required. Even after extended use, touching up the edge was simple; a quick polish brought the 3⁄16″ blade right back to cutting condition.

Whether you’re rounding over edges or adding chamfers, this tool handles it effortlessly. It’s an ideal solution for gently softening corners without the hassle of setting up a router or going through the steps of using a traditional hand plane followed by sanding. I =especially like using it to ease the super sharp edges on PVC boards.

Room To Improve

If I had to offer criticism on this plane there is one small thing I think could be improved. While the adjustment wheel is great for fine-tuning your cuts, it doesn’t into place. If you’re not careful, your palm or fingers can inadvertently move the wheel, changing your depth adjustment. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s something to be mindful of while using it.

Built-In Storage

One thoughtful addition is the built-in blade storage located in the handle, which keeps everything organized and within reach during use.

Accessory Options

  • Model #70740: Includes the corner easing plane with one 45° chamfer blade.
  • Model #70748: Includes one 45° chamfer blade and three radius blades (1⁄8″, 3⁄16″, 1⁄4″).
  • Model #70743: Replacement 3-pack of radius blades.

Final Thoughts

The Jorgensen Corner Easing Plane is a top-notch tool for carpenters seeking precision, reliability, and long-lasting performance. It’s lightweight, sturdy, and while the blades are made of O1 steel instead of carbide, they maintain a sharp edge surprisingly well. Offering versatile blade options and smooth operation, it’s a highly practical addition to any hand tool kit, especially considering its affordable price.
