Gone are the days of storing tools in and working out of cardboard boxes or milk crates.

Tool storage chests, rolling cabinets, carts and specialty tool boxes have been making mechanics and technicians jobs easier  for a long time.   These days contractors, woodworkers and frankly anyone who has countless tools to keep track of can use and appreciate the storage capability and organization that a tool storage chest offers.

Tool storage chest and cabinets are a dime a dozen but we found one worthy of your attention.

Milwaukee Tool Storage Cabinet Review

Milwaukee just released their Milwaukee 46-inch steel tool storage chest and cabinet which provides industrial grade storage, organization and mobility that will stand up to tough use.  Designed as a heavy duty workstation, this rolling chest is similar to what most folk call a “mechanics tool chest,” and will no doubt help you keep your workshop or garage space clutter free.

The Milwaukee 46-Inch steel tool storage chest and cabinet is actually two separate boxes, sold individually or as a set. The bottom box is the roller cabinet which has casters under it to allow you to move your tools around the shop. The top box is the chest, and is a multi-drawer box with smaller drawers and a flip-up lid, providing storage for larger tools or just for common items you need to get to all the time.

Durable

Both units are constructed out of steel with a reinforced 6-Gauge angle-iron, trolley base frame and chest has heavy-duty, welded steel construction.  The lower cabinet has  5-inch industrial casters for easy mobility, even when fully loaded.

Black anodized aluminum drawers and drawer pulls give this two-toned powder coated, Milwaukee red and black cabinet a real sharp look.

Mobile

The Milwaukee 46-Inch Steel Tool Storage Chest and Cabinet has 5-inch industrial grade casters have a rubber coating and easily glide along the floor 3ven when loaded down with tools.    This unit has a capacity for 1800 pounds and the casters were built for that.   One side has locking casters that easily engage the lock by pushing down the foot pedal.  To unlock a smaller foot lever is easily lifted up.

Capacity

This unit has a combined total 27,223 cu. in. tool storage capacity for organizing and storing all of your tools.  16 drawers each with 100 pound ratings, open smoothly and close with self-close ball bearings slides.

Two of the lower cabinet drawers have dual slides to support 200lbs.  We found the slides to be durable and open and close easily when fully loaded with tools, there was no slop or wobble!

The pneumatic flip-up lid on the tool chest, opens and closes smoothly and in a controlled, safe fashion. The back end of the flip-up area has an integrated metal peg wall, and the work surface in this area allows for a 10.5” of clearance from the lid when closed.

One pull-out drawer has a work surface for using and storing a laptop or documents.  There is also a independent locking drawer for valuables or items that you want locked at all times.

The tool cabinet, lower right drawer, has a removable power tool organizer to keep tools upright, and easily accessible.  Cordless tools can be stowed so their handles are facing up, for quick access, or on their backs so you can see the working end of the tool for fast identification.

On-Board Power Strips

The lower cabinet has an external power strip mounted on the side panel and the upper chest has an internal power strip located inside the flip-up lid.  We found this super convenient for charging cordless tool batteries.

Secure

The top chest and lower cabinet both come separate sets [2] of keys.  One key locks all the drawers for each unit.  Additionally the top chest unit has one drawer that can independently be locked.  The locks worked well but upper locking latch looks flimsy and easily bent or damaged if someone accidentally left the lock engaged and dropped the lid down on it.
