Taping Electrical Receptacles

Electrical Tape and Receptacle

When remodeling I often have to remove live outlets temporarily from the electrical boxes. Anytime this is done I always advocate using electrical tape to wrap electrical receptacles such as outlet or switch terminals.

This prevents accidental contact with your hands or tools with the live wires or terminals causing an accidental short.   On larger and wider devices the screw terminals are closer to the sides of a metal box or bare ground wire shorting the screw.

This particular job we were installing bead board around the outlets and by having them taped up, we reduced the likelihood that our tape measures touched a wire or terminal which could result in a shock.
