SpeedSand: Sanding Applicator Tool Review
Recently I received a package from Bryon Bierman, inventor of the Speed Sand sanding disc applicator, asking me to evaluate his product.
According to Bryon, Speed Sand is a brand new tool that will speed up sanding production and remove the hassle of aligning discs to your sander.
Bryon send me three different Speed Sand applicators.
A 5″ applicator with five holes,
A 5″ applicator with 8 holes and
A 6″ applicator with 6 holes.
These applicators fit most common orbital sanders with vacuum holes.
Both 5″ applicators are shown in the photo above. The 6″ applicator is shown below.
I brought the Speed Sand to my shop and put it to the test.
My first impression was how innovative and simple it was. The applicators appear to be of quality, heavy duty plastic and are “Made in the U.S.A.” I like that!
The applicators hold about six hook and loop sanding discs, installed upside down so the hook and loop is facing out toward the sander.
To use the applicator you peel off and discard the old sanding disc, firmly touching the applicator to your sander pad, ensuring that you are lining up the vacuum holes with the protruding tabs on the applicator. [photo above]
The applicator tabs fit in the sanders vacuum holes which line up the new sanding discs nicely. Vacuum holes displayed below.
After lining up the holes and pressing firmly you remove the applicator and the new disc is left behind.
The Speed Sand is touted to align and attach sanding discs quickly, effortlessly all the while saving time and it does!
I see this applicator tool saving tool down time and money in high production activities such as mill shops or with painting contractors.
Speed Sand mentions in their literature the following:
” Shop owners have observed that during the sanding process their employees go through multiple, time-consuming steps. Also noting that workers make ‘changing the discs’ an opportune time, to chat, take a brief break, which extends further the sanding process / project time.”
Bryon sent me an extra set for me to give to my painting contractor friend, Mark at O’Lalor Painting in Concord.
Mark is going to let his crew try out the applicator tool to see if this in fact a true time saving device in his painting operations, and will comment on his observations later in this post or I will re-post.
As far as the Concord Carpenter goes, I just don’t see myself getting alot of use in this tool / applicator.
First, I don’t do a large amount of sanding where I am using a slew of sanding discs. Second, I’m motivated enough not to become distracted or feel the need to take a break everytime I have to change a sanding disk. I can change my discs quick enough.
The Speed Sand sells for $ 9.99 and can be ordered online at Speed Sand’s website.
