Securing A Ladder

How to  secure extension ladders

When I hear the term securing a ladder I immediately thinks about either one of two things, or both:

1.  Preventing the bottom feet of the ladder from kicking out.

Take the time to always use a ladder with non-slip feet.  additionally nail a cleat to the floor or anchor the ladder feet to a stake or bush with a strap or rope.

Securing the base of a ladder to prevent accidental movement is easy to do in most cases and can prevent serious injury.  Brace or tie off the ladder near the base. If there is no structure to the tie off to, use a stake in the ground.

2.  Preventing the top of the ladder to slide sideways.

Rest the top of the ladder against a solid surface that can sustain the weight of the ladder and the person standing on it.

Take steps to secure the ladder firmly at the top to prevent it from slipping sideways.
