Roof and Ladder Safety – A Lesson On What NOT To Do
I was driving home from work today and saw these guys residing this dormer. Since roof and ladder safety is such a liability, I thought that a picture is worth a thousand words!
I bet these guys were low bidders. As a contractor it’s tough to compete against guys like this who skimp on safety and other issues.
I hope the owner of this home made sure the contractor was insured!!!
These guys placed the feet of their ladder directly into the aluminum gutter to support the ladder and the operators body weight. Gutters are not designed for this kind of weight or stress. There are special roof ladders designed for this purpose similar to the one pictured below.
Ladder safety is no joke. Take the time to go over these rules and make sure your crew knows them as well.

What struck me was the lack of common sense and extreme risk that the worker on the ladder was taking. Every year falls from ladder account for an increasing number of severe injuries and even death.
Accidents involving ladders cause an estimated 300 deaths and 130,000 injuries requiring emergency medical attention. Ladder accidents usually are caused by the following:
- Improper selection,
- Improper care
- Improper use
