Rain Barrels

55 gallon rain barrelRain Collection Barrels

Rain Barrels are not new but there a great idea to harvest rain water and reduce using tap or well water and save you money as well.  Collection of non chlorinated, rain water is better for plants, after all that’s what naturally sustains plants.

Rain barrels are also a good back up plan in the event of a water shortage or as part of your emergency preparedness plan.

A ¼ inch of rain from the average roof will completely fill a 55 gallon barrel.  [1 inch of rain on a 1000 sq. ft. roof equals 623 gallons of water. Calculate the yield of your roof by multiplying the square footage of your roof by 623 and divide by 1000.]

Most rain barrels are  made from recycled barrels and  have a capacity of 55 gallons. The barrels were used to ship butter and are made of Food Quality High Density Poly Ethylene.

Setting up a rain barrel at a gutter downspouts can assue that you will collect roof rain runoff.   Fitted with plastic fittings fittings for the outlet and top overflow control valves,  because brass and steel do not interface well with plastic barrels.  An aluminum screen louvered inlet to stop leaves and bugs from living (and breeding) in your pure rainwater. The rain barrel tops are sealed to prevent children from getting into them.

If you want to change or enhance the color of your barrel there are two products you can paint them with spray paint.
