Porter Cable 9750 Tiger Claw Reciprocating Saw

Porter Cable 9750 Tiger Claw Reciprocating Saw Review

By Ethan Bickford

First Impression:

I picked up the Porter Cable 9750 Tiger Claw as my first professional grade reciprocating saw a few years ago. This saw has been out for a while but I haven’t seen it around much which is frankly surprising.

As I researched reciprocating saws I came to find that this is arguably the most versatile reciprocating saw on the market and is a great tool for getting into tight spaces while still being powerful with an 11.5 amp motor.

Porter Cable 9750 Tiger Claw Versatility:

What makes the Porter Cable 9750 Tiger Claw  so versatile is some smart engineering that allows the tool to be adap

ted to fit into some very odd a

nd or tight spaces for a saw of it’s size and power.

The entire front end of the saw is on a joint that is also the front gear housing and allows about half of the saw to be oriented within a 180 degree arc relative to the handle of the saw wit

h 13 positive stop locations.

In addition to this the very front portion of the saw which holds the blade and shoe can rotate 360 degrees with 12 positive stops.

This allows for some pretty amazing configurations. I don’t have any specific situations I can recall where this saw has saved my bacon because there have been so many of them since I got it!

Durability:

The Porter Cable 9750 Tiger Claw Reciprocating Saw is well constructed tool.

The motor housings are metal and there’s a lot of rubber grip on the front of the saw which provides for good control of the business end of the tool.

The buttons used to actuate the front rotation and 180 degree arc features have a solid feel, stiff springs, and are set into ridges in the rubber over-molding, making them a little hard to push.   Which is actually fantastic because you’re less likely to accidentally press them while in use.

The detents on both the arc and rotation have a very positive feel and audibly click into place. The variable speed trigger is plenty comfortable and offers good blade speed control.

Tool Free Blade Changing:

The blade change and shoe adjustment are both tool-less, so no wrenches needed to use this tool. My only complaint in this area is that the adjustment on the shoe is a little finicky.

I found the best way to work it is to slide the shoe in and press on the locking lever simultaneously and this helps to find the detents in the shoe and get it locked down.  You’ll notice a lack of some features that are becoming common on high end saws like vibration reduction, and orbital action.

The mechanisms involved in allowing this saw to be so versatile also keep the saw from being a raw powerhouse of cutting performance. That said, it’s a solid tool with unmatched versatility.

Overall Impression:

This wouldn’t be a great primary saw for someone who does a lot of demo as there are some options out there with better performance and features. But if you are an occasional recip saw user or a frequent user who wants a tool that can do things that are impossible for other reciprocating saws I’d highly recommend the PORTER-CABLE 9740 Tiger Claw Variable Angle 11.5 Amp Reciprocating Saw
