Porter Cable 20 Volt Compact Drill Driver Review

Porter Cable 20 Volt Lithium Ion Compact Drill/Driver (PCCK600LB)

The folks at Porter Cable recently launched its 20 Volt MAX* Lithium Ion Compact Drill/Driver (PCCK600LB) and 20 Volt MAX* Lithium Ion Impact Driver (PCCK640LB), which are both part of the new 20 Volt MAX* system.

The folks at Porter Cable recently sent me the Porter Cable 20 Volt Compact Drill Driver to review and evaluate.

The Porter Cable 20 Volt Compact Drill Driver PCCK600LB is called a compact drill driver but it seemed big to me.   It weighs only 3.7 pounds and is less than 8 inches in length. It comes with a 1.5 amp-hour battery.

A two-speed gear transmission delivers 0 to 400 RPM in low speed  high-torque applications and 0 to 1,600 RPM for low-torque applications.  The motor and transmission generate 1,450 inch-pounds of maximum torque, while the variable speed trigger delivers 0-2,900 rotations per minute (RPM) and 0-3,100 beats per minute (BPM).

Porter Cable 20 Volt Compact Drill Driver Features:

One nice feature and MUST HAVE on any 20 volt drill is a 1/2-inch metal ratcheting chuck.  The 1/2 inch chuck allows you to be able to use the larger diameter drill bits that most PROs use.   I found that the The Porter Cable metal chuck grabbed drill bits and really held them tight.

A battery gauge is included as well and allows for monitoring of the battery.  On top of the tool are two  a magnetic bit tip holders.   I tried to get bits to fall off this holder by violently shaking the tool and was rarely successful.  The magnets did their job well.

Other standard features include an LED work light, rubber bumpers on the sides of the tool, and a belt clip that can be fastened to fit either right- or left-handed users.

Using the Porter Cable 20 Volt Compact Drill Driver:

This tool does not feel compact and I was unimpressed with the lumen output from the on board LED light.

Overall I as impressed with the Porter Cable 20 Volt Compact Drill Driver.  It performed as advertised was able to drill large diameter holes and drive fasteners reasonably well.  The 1.5 Ah battery limits its longevity but it also keeps the weight down.

Overall Impression:

This drill driver is not as heavy duty as some of the more pricier models out there but you cannot deny the price vs. value.  In my opinion this drill driver is an amazing value for what you get and what you pay.   While maybe not suited for rugged job-sites this tool would make an outstanding addition to the workshop or finish carpenter or cabinet installer.

How Much And Where To Buy?
