Milwaukee is constantly trying to improve productivity and provide problem solving, innovation on the job site, this means knowing the user and understanding their process on the job site.   Milwaukee recently achieved this in their new and improved voltage detector, the Milwaukee 10-1000V Dual Range Voltage Detector 2203-20, that .

What is Voltage Detector?

A voltage detector is a device that tells the user whether an object has an electrical charge. It can be a simple, pen-shaped piece of testing hardware that indicates the presence of electricity, or it can be an advanced tool, like the 2303-20 used to detect dual voltage levels in electrical systems.

Voltage detectors are used by electrical workers and all of the different trades that work on or near electricity  As a remodeling contractor I always have a voltage detector in my tool belt and use it often.

Job Site Solutions and Problem Solving:

Milwaukee saw an opportunity where they could improve on their older, 2202-20  CAT IV 100 voltage meter.  They saw the job site changing with emerging technologies and environmentally conscious efforts driving the growth of extra-low voltage systems.  Currently, users were left with tools that could not detect voltages that were becoming increasingly common. This drove Milwaukee to develop a voltage detector that clearly detect voltage below 50V, without sacrificing any functionality of the standard voltage detector.

Competitive units on the market had attempted this, delivering voltage detectors with multiple modes of operation, or multiple buttons that are used during operation which can create confusion or uncertainty during use.   Milwaukee took saw this as an opportunity  to create a voltage detector with a single mode of operation that could automatically detect and differentiate 10-49V and 50-1000V while also operating as a work-light. By delivering this, users can now rest assured that they are not missing voltage in the 10-1000V range.

First Impression:

The Milwaukee 10-1000V Dual Range Voltage Detector 2203-20 has a pen like design and has a flat tip [working end] for checking outlets.    This detector is powered by two AAA batteries and was designed to detect and automatically differentiate 10-49 volts AC [low voltage] and  50-1000 volts AC [standard voltage] allowing for a broad application on the job site.

The 2203-22 was specifically designed for non-contact detection of standard voltage in cables, cords, circuit breakers, lighting fixtures, switches, outlets and wires and also provides detection of the following common systems that would normally go undetected when using a standard voltage detector:

Using the Milwaukee 2202-20 Voltage Detector:

A single button turns on the unit and illuminates a green “on” indicator and an audible beep as well as illuminates a high intensity, LED which does well at illuminating the workspace.  I’ve even used it as a pen light – works great.

The tip of the Milwaukee 10-1000V Dual Range Voltage Detector 2203-20 blinks yellow, and will emits tone in unison to the blinking light, when sensing 10 to 49 volts.   The unit blinks red and emits a continuous tone when sensing 50 to 1000 volts.  The low voltage blinks slower and has a slower audible and the higher voltage blinks faster and has a continuous tone – you can definitely tell the difference between the sounds.

The tool is lightweight and extremely durable.  My older 2202-20 model sustained numerous drops and is constantly being jostled in my tool bags with other tools, and sometimes is accidentally turned on.  The 2203-20 will beep 3-times and shut off, if not used, for approximately 5-minutes.  This helps maintain the batteries and is also useful for when I accidentally, and I have, turn on the unit when reaching for other tools in my tool bag.
