Most people I know turn their nose when the word linoleum is mentioned.  That’s partly due to the reputation of the old vinyl floors that were used decades ago.

Over the last ten years linoleum has made a huge comeback and this is largely due to its “green status” and bright, lively colors.

Linoleum is primarily made of all natural products, such as linseed oil from flax, wood powder, limestone, resins and some colored pigments. The backing is made from jute, which is a natural grass.

Marmoleum has been a mainstay floor covering for over 100 years.  Forbo’s Marmoleum, Armstrong’s Marmorette and Domco Tarkett’s Linosom products are all made with natural products.

These newer products are biodegradable and have little to no VOC emissions.    They can also be installed using a solvent free adhesive.

These products are tough but can also create a visually striking floor covering from checkers to patterns and diagonals.  The floor is also highly resistant animals, foot traffic and moving of furniture.

Benefits of linoleum are:

Today most linoleum costs approximately $3.00 to $6.00 a square foot.
