Leviton LED Occupancy Sensor, Model 9864-LED
I own a small remodeling business and as a result my basement seconds as my company workshop. Often times, I find myself entering the basement through my bulkhead basement after dark, and carrying tools or materials.
Lighting the Way
The problem with this is that the workshop lights are wired already and does not have a 3-way light switch at the bulkhead entrance. I know what you’re saying, just have an electrician rewire your shop lights. Well that is certainly one option, but I had another idea.
Repurposing ceiling outlets
I often enter the shop, drop my jacket and tool bags and then head upstairs. Wouldn’t it be nice not to have to turn lights on and back track to turn them off?
I decided to install three Leviton LED Ceiling Occupancy Sensors along my walking path to get me through my shop and upstairs. I had three ceiling outlets that I never use anymore since rewiring my shop and figured that they would be the perfect place to mount my occupancy sensor lights.
Problem solving with the Leviton LED Occupancy Sensor
The Leviton LED Ceiling Occupancy Sensor mounts on the ceiling outlet box and has an occupancy sensor. When motion is detected, it automatically turning lights ON and turns the lights off after 3 minutes when the room is vacated.
Occupancy Sensor Coverage
The occupancy sensor seems to pick me up at least 8-10 away and I was able to completely cover and light my path through the workshop and safely upstairs without having to deal with any light switches.
The Leviton sensor has a 284-degree motion sensor quickly switches the light on as you approach, and lights the area up bright.
It is easy to install with pigtail leads and knockout holes for multiple ceiling box configurations. Best part, each light installs in less than 15-minutes.
The LED light has a 8.7 Watt LED module, [800 Lumen] it energy efficient and bright enough for me to safely navigate into and through my shop until I either leave the shop, or reach a light switch.
The LED light puts out a color temperature of 4000k and has a LED life of approximately 50,000 hours. This light is ideal for indoor in locations such as:
- Storage areas
- Utility rooms
The Leviton LED Occupancy Sensors cost me $45.00 online here: Leviton LED Occupancy Sensor, Model 9864-LED
Lighting Problem Solved
They were WAY cheaper than hiring an electrician and allow me to carry tools and materials into my shop without having to reach for a light switch. No wall switch is needed, they sense motion, turn on and then off 3-minutes after you’ve left the area. It keeps the space safely lit and reduces the potential for accidents. For me this was a winning solution that worked well for me.
