ENDURANCE, Shackelton’s Leadership Lesson!

In the residential and construction remodeling world we don’t usually have to kill our dogs and eat seals to survive but that doesn’t mean we can’t learn a thing or two about leadership.

This is the true story of Earnest Shackleton’s amazing 1914 voyage to cross the Antarctic.  It is based on the perspectives of other crew members drawn from interviews, diaries, private papers and personal interviews and is an amazing lesson in leadership.

From the beginning the expedition was met with difficulties. Shackleton’s ship, the Endurance, was frozen in ice in early 1915 and then crushed ten months later, he and his men were 1200 miles away from the nearest human outpost.

The ship was initially abandoned because of the ice-crush and the party had to camp on a drifting ice floe, their only goal now was to survive until rescued.

Leadership Amongst Chaos

In reality, they knew that no one was coming to rescue them.  Shackleton’s new goal was to get every man home alive.

They had to kill their own dogs for food but they did manage, eventually, to hunt seals, sea leopards and penguins. Their greatest danger was always the weather.

The book paints Shackleton as an incredible leader. This is an inspiring story a really great read!
