LEED Certification

Green Products that Are Not Green

LEED Certification

How is LEED certification leading the way in construction?

As like most industry, focus, priorities and techniques shift and change as new technologies are discovered and applied and the construction industry is no different. While we put a larger importance on greener buildings, the industry has been forced to alter its thinking in order to supply this ever growing demand for options such as wind turbine technology in all sectors, including residential and more environmentally friendly and renewable products such as natural and recycled materials.

Supporting this new way of thinking is LEED certification which is quickly becoming a global standard for building sustainability.LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and environmental Design and is a set of rating systems put in place for the design, construction and future maintenance of green homes and buildings.

Students looking to earn their construction management degree are opting to add this certification to their builds in order to satisfy clients about their ability to manage an environmentally sensitive construction project and adhere to a very specific set of criteria.

The LEED rating system for buildings was developed and is administered by the US Green Building Council which is a non-profit conglomerate of building industry leaders and offers four certification levels for new construction.

These levels are Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Even if you have already obtained your construction management degree, adding any of the LEEDS certification levels to your building projects puts you in a class well above those without it. Not only does it substantially increase your value as a prospective employee for your next job, it also helps continue our move towards recognizing the need to responsibly look after this world that we live in.

Achieving a LEEDS certified build takes a great deal of planning and depending on which certification you are looking to gain, could require an increased budget. A well trained construction manager will take these factors into consideration during the planning stage of any project, and through the knowledge obtained with their construction management degree, will be able to plan and execute the necessary steps required for certification.

If you are looking to set yourself above the competition for those attractive construction management jobs that are now starting to appear as we emerge from our past economic struggles, consider building under the LEEDS certified standards. It’s a globally recognized nod that means you understand the value of our world and what we do while we’re here.
