Roof Drainage – Keeping Roof Rain Off A Walkway
Recently I was asked to replace a rotted wood gutter above this entryway with a new gutter. the goal was to keep roof rain runoff off the walkway. In the colder months water runoff on this walk way would freeze, making this path treacherous.
A Slippery Path
At the time the customer mentioned that they wished the grade surrounding this gutter were different. They explained to me that in the early Winter and Spring months water pours out of the existing down spout and washes over their walkway, freezes and leaves it treacherous to traverse.
While standing there I noticed that an adjacent gutter / down pipe ran into a pvc pipe in the ground. [photo above ]
Usually this means that the pipe drains into a dry well, cistern or to a lower area to drain.
Solving Drainage Problems
A few feet away I also noticed this surface drain grate. Inside there was a pvc pipe coming from the general direction of this drain pipe.
I convinced the customer to allow me to excavate the area to find out if I could intersect this pipe and tie my new gutter down spout into it.
Lucky for us the pipe ran right by the location of the new gutter down spout. We cut the pipe and added a Tee connection to tie in the new down spout.
Problem solved!
