What Color Is Your Garage Floor?

Guest post by Genevieve.

Today’s garages take on a lot of different functions. They are a place to put your car(s), your tools and sports equipment, and your extra fridge for your extra beer. They may be turned into a storage shed, a workshop, or an outright man cave. Any more a boring gray floor may not seem like enough, but putting down a rug just seems like a cleaning nightmare. You may not be in the garage flooring business, but there are many ways to improve the appearance of a plain concrete floor without replacing the concrete already there.

Stains – Anymore, stains are not just for wood, but can also help to give your concrete a makeover without the complication of applying and providing upkeep for paint. A good stain will also retain the appearance of the concrete while lending it some additional interest. For those interested in spending a little more time for an original masterpiece, stains can be applied like paint in different patterns.

Etching – Perhaps you want to transform your garage floor to look like you laid entirely new flooring, but are not interested in actually laying a new floor. Perhaps you simply want to add pattern and design elements. Etching is a wonderful way of changing the appearance of your floor without truly changing the floor. From geometric patterns to transforming your floor to look like brickwork, etching can be done by a professional or on your own. Used in conjunction with stains, the effect can be trans-formative.

Epoxy or Floor Paints – Looking for something that will simply make your floor more usable and durable? Laying down a layer of epoxy or floor paint can help make your garage feel friendly and cleaner. A variety of colors can add an element of fun and make the space your own.

Floor Mats – If you want a quick solution that is easy to do and easy to replace should it become damaged and don’t mind spending a little extra, purchasing and putting down floor mats can really have a huge effect on a garage. These mats are generally made of tough rubber and come in squares. For a creative effect, use different colors to create a pattern or border on the floor.

While there are probably many areas of your house you may want to update, spending a little time on changing the appearance of your garage floor can really improve appearance, especially if you don’t just use it as a home for your car. The options are wide and can take as much time and money as you want to spend. Who knows, after practicing on the concrete floor of a garage you may decide to take on your driveway or concrete patio!
