Fireplace Mantle Retrofit

Buying A Fireplace Mantle

We are in working in Winchester, Mass this month adding some nice finishing touches to a high end retirement condo before the owner moves in.

The old mantel above was 6′ high. Besides being to large for the room and not to the new owners taste, it was also too high for the owner to have a flat screen t.v. installed.

We removed this mantel and gas insert.

When the mantel was removed this is what we found – photo below. A large open area and steel studs.

Bill is measuring for blocking that will be added to to support the mounting bracket for a future flat screen t.v. The electrician on the right is working on relocating power and cable t.v. for the future t.v.

The wall sconces flanking the gas insert were removed, circuit disconnected and holes plastered.

The plan is to install a slightly larger gas insert at floor level. The hearth and tile surround were removed and will be replaced with solid limestone. The floor on both sides of the mantel will be patched and the new mantel will be an Algonquin Mantel which is approx. 52″ high. Pictured below.
