Duct Cleaning

How To Clean A Dryer Duct

Have you cleaned your air ducts before?

If you home has air ducts it may be time to consider cleaning them.    Regularly replacing your HVAC air filter is great but over the years molds, allergens, lint and dirt can accumulate.

Mold And Allergens:

Build-up of mold and dust mites can breed and release spores, bacteria and other junk  by-products into your homes air.  If you’re like me and suffer from allergies you may affected by these airborne particles and not even know it.

I installed a large capacity HVAC filter medium for my system and run pleated air filters specially designed for allergens.  Works well but the filters are pricey.

If a family member is experiencing unusual or unexplained allergy like symptoms or illnesses you might want to investigate your duct work as well as have a discussion with your doctor.

Visually Inspect Your Ducts:

Visually  inspect the inside of the ducts, look in the vents and large air returns in your wall.   If you see no indication that your air ducts are contaminated with large deposits of dust or mold (no musty odor or visible mold growth), having your air ducts cleaned is probably unnecessary.

Note – It’s normal for the return registers to get dusty, dust in the air is pulled into this grate and it will show up on the grate and sidewall of the duct.  These grater  registers can be easily vacuumed or removed and cleaned.

Duct Cleaning Process:

Complete duct-work cleaning should involve all of the HVAC the pipes are in hard-to-reach places. A duct cleaning company should as a matter of course clean the air handler drip tray, fans, grills, diffusers, heat exchange units, filter systems, fan motors and housing and furnace filters.

If you have allergies or are sensitive to chemical smells make sure you tell them BEFORE they come out to your house.  There are environmentally-safe cleaners on the market that are easier on the sinuses than chemicals.

Air duct cleaning services typically range in cost from $500 to $1,000 per heating and cooling system, depending on the services offered, the size of the system to be cleaned, system accessibility, climatic region, and level of contamination.

Note :  Duct cleaning has never been shown to actually prevent health problems.   dirt that accumulated inside ducts are usually created inside the home.  Contaminants from pets, pollen, cooking, cleaning and smoking all contribute.    Removing those causes will eliminate some f the dust and dirt contaminants in the home.
