Dovetail joints are extremely strong and attractive joints, and are traditionally used on boxes, chests, quality furniture and cabinet drawers.

The Dovetail Joint

A dovetail joint is a strong joint technique most commonly used in higher end millwork and woodworking.   You often see dovetails in furniture, cabinets, and timber frame homes.

A dovetail joint consists of two boards mating.  One board has a series of pins cut to extend from the end of one board interlock with a series of tails cut into the end of another board. The pins and tails have a trapezoidal shape.

Dovetails are glued and require no mechanical fasteners.  They are known for their ability to resist to being pulled apart and also for not needing mechanical fasteners.

Custom Drawers

At Concord Carpetner, all of the built in cabinet drawers that we custom install are constructed out of maple and employ dovetail construction. We also clear coat them with lacquer to seal them.
