Delta 8″ Stacked Dado Set

Delta 8" Stacked Dado SetDelta 8″ Stacked Dado Set 35-7670 – Review

Dado blades are a common item in most serious woodworking shops.  When making built in furniture, bookcases or other finish carpentry items having a dado set can add versatility to your table saw, strength to your cabinet case joints and overall quality to your work.

The folks at Delta recently sent me their Delta 8″ Stacked Dado Set 35-7670 to review and evaluate and I’m glad they did!

What Is A Dado Blade?

A dado blade is really called a “stacked dado set.”  It  is a pair of circular saw blades fixed on either side of a set of removable chipper blades.  As the dado set spins, the two outside blades define and cut the dado walls as the inside chipper blades plow out the material in between.   The chipper blades also flatten the bottom of the dado cut. Chipper blades and shims are added / removed as needed to make up the desired dado width.   Using a dado blade usually means you will nee to change out your table saw insert to accommodate the thicker blade set.

First Impression:

I must say that the size, quality and sturdiness of the heavy duty storage case was great to see.  I’m so tired seeing tools and kits come in soft canvas or soft cheap plastic cases.   Having a proper storage case that  can stand up to job-site or workshop conditions will help keep the blades sharp when not in use and increase their lifespan.

The 35-7670 dado set has two 24 tooth carbide tipped blades that form the outer cuts of the dado.  These blade are constructed with C4 micro-grain carbide teeth and feature laser-cut expansion slots to minimize noise and edge vibration.

The 35-7670 dado set also includes six [6]  inner chipper blades that have a flat bottom cut.  Twelve [12] stainless steel shims, yes they provide shims, are also provided and help the user make up and fine tune the dado thickness.   All of the blades are clearly marked for quick reference and set up – nice touch!

The six chippers include:

  1. [4] 1/8″ [32 mm]  chippers
  2. [1] 3/32″ [2.4mm] chipper
  3. [1] 1/16″ [1.6mm] chipper

The twelve shims include:

  1. [4] 0.20″ [0.5mm]
  2. [4] 0.10″[.25mm]
  3. [4] .005″ [0.127mm]

Using The Delta 8″ Stacked Dado Set:

Setting up the dado set was a breeze.  As with all table saw blade changes there is set up time but this set was quick and easy to set up.   All of the cuts were clean and the joints went together great. I mostly worked in maple making 3/4 dado’s and the blades and chippers worked great.

Overall Impression:

I would highly recommend this set to home owners and pro’s alike.  It makes beautiful cuts that are flat bottomed and crisp, as well as  clean side wall cuts.   Professionals, woodworkers and serious DIYers will find this set a great value that delivers top quality!  It will not disappoint.
