What Is DeckWrap?

DeckWrap is made by MFM Building Products, a manufacturer of a full envelope of waterproofing and weather barrier products for the construction industry.

DeckWrap is a self‐adhering waterproofing membrane that protects deck joists, house sheathing and leger board connections from water damage.  This rubberized membrane is excellent as a seconday flashing defense when used in conjuction with other metal and pvc flashing ledger systems.  The purpose of using DeckWrap is to prevent standing water and debris from rotting your joist. It’s rubber based properties help to seal nail and screw holes, all of which can cause premature rot.

DeckWrap can be used to seperate pressure treated, untreated and synthetic woods and stops corrosion of metal components that come in contact with ACQ‐treated lumber.   ACQ‐treated lumber has preservative chemical in it that can prematurely corrode galvanized connectors.

DeckWrap is sold in rolls of 3”, 6” and 12” widths by 25’ lengths and is 40 mils thick.

Uses for DeckWrap on the Jobsite : 

1. Apply DeckWrap to clean, dry wood, at temperatures above 40ºF. In cooler temperatures, use MFM Spray Adhesive™ to improve adhesion. DeckWrap may also be mechanically attached with staples or roofing nails if needed.
2. Fold the DeckWrap off the wall and onto and over the face of the ledger board.  
3. Use 3″ DeckWrap to wrap and protect the tops of all deck joists, stairs, and uprights and wider wrap for deck beams.   Apply DeckWrap to the top of the joists and wrap about 1” down each side of the joist.
4. To protect metal from ACQ-treated lumber: 3” or 6” DeckWrap is recommended. Apply a protective layer of DeckWrap between the ACQ lumber and the metal. This will prevent the ACQ from corroding the metal. Make certain to use fasteners that are compatible with ACQ lumber.

To flash deck ledger boards:

• DeckWrap can be cut with a utility knife 
• To flash deck ledger boards use the 12” wide roll of DeckWrap and wrap the material up the side wall a minimum of 3”.  I prefer more than that and often go 10″ or more, even aplying an additional roll on the house sheathing as needed.
• Simply remove the white backing paper and press DeckWrap into position.
• Overlap seams 3″.
• Tip:  A seam roller is a good toll to smooth and help adhere the DeckWrap to the wood suface.
• Tip:  Install siding or decking within 3 months.

To protect deck joists, stairs, and uprights:

• Use the 3” DeckWrap rolls.   This allows you to cover the entire joist or stringer and overlap the sides 3/4 of an inch.
• Simply remove the white backing paper and press DeckWrap into position.
• Overlap seams 3″.
• Tip:  A seam roller is a good toll to smooth and help adhere the DeckWrap to the wood suface.
• Tip:  Install decking within 3 months.
• To protect metal from ACQ-treated lumber:
• Use the 3” or 6” DeckWrap and place the DeckWrap onto the ledger or beam and prior to installing metal connectors.  Also wrap your joist ends prior to placing them into the joust hangers.    This will create a protective layer of DeckWrap between the ACQ lumber and the metal.

To protect deck, fence or mailbox posts:

• Use the 12” DeckWrap and completely wrap the portion of the post that is buried in the gound. 
• Overlap seams 3″.
• Ensure that you leave an inch or two above ground. 
• For posts that are installed on top of a concrete pad, wrap DeckWrap around the bottom and sides of the post to create an effective barrier.
