BOSCH Top-Handle Jig Saw JS470E

BOSCH Top-Handle Jig Saw JS470E

BOSCH Top-Handle Jig Saw JS470E Review

A jig saw is a hand held power tool that utilizes a reciprocating blade to cut material. The reciprocating blade moves up and down and allows it’s user to be able to make very tight turns when cutting. Jigsaw puzzles get their name from the jig saw puzzle since they were once made of wood and required complex cuts to create.

Jigsaws are an amazing tool. No other one tool can crosscut; bevel cut, miter, and make a plunge cut and scrolling curved cuts with the precision of a jigsaw.

History of the Jigsaw

The jigsaw design started in 1946 when a Bosch employee installed a blade on his wife’s sewing machine almost half a century ago, the idea for a jig saw was born. The very first portable jig saw was introduced in 1947. Today, Bosch is well known for making excellent jigsaws so I was excited when the folks atBosch sent me their top handled 7.0-Amp, Model JS470E jigsaw to review.

Bosch 7.0-AMP Jigsaw Review

FIRST IMPRESSION:

The Bosch JS470E jigsaw comes in a molded case with a blade storage compartment. It was comfortable to hold and the soft molded grip felt nice in my hands.

Once out of the box I noticed a few things right off the bat.

The Bosch JS470E jigsaw has four orbital-action settings provide options for different range of blade strokes for smooth to more aggressive cutting functions. Generally slower-speeds are required for denser materials and faster speeds for softer materials.

Like all of the Bosch jigsaws, an adjustable dust blower allows the user to keep the sawdust off the cutting line.
Probably the best option of the Bosch JS470E jigsaw is the tool less blade-change system which allows the user to quickly change a T-shank blade without a tool as well as avoiding touching a red hot blade with your fingers.

The Bosch JS470E jigsaw also has an ambidextrous lock-on button making the tool friendly for both right and left handed users. The lock on button is useful for continuous, long cuts and allows the user to release their grip on the trigger and adjust their hand for more comfort and control.

A Variable speed dial located at the rear of the tool is out of the way but conveniently located it the user decides the need to set a different operating speed.

The Bosch JS470E jigsaw also has a sturdy die-cast foot with steel insert and on-board bevel wrench, securely positioned. I really liked the storage location but was

disappointed that a tool is needed to bevel. Like many tools these days the Bosch JS470E jigsaw comes with a super long cord. As a carpenter I find this very useful. Many times I set up my work station and run most of my tools off a centrally located electrical power station. Having tools with longer cords allows me the flexibility to move the tool around a bit and not have to attach an extension cord.

USING THE BOSCH JS470E JIGSAW:

The Bosch JS470E 7.0-AMP jigsaw has plenty of power and performed well. The saw s variable speed trigger allows the user to establish a cut line by starting slow and working up cutting speed. Once up to speed the JS470E consistently made clean, smooth cuts with no tool vibration.

The Bosch JS470E also performed well upside down. I found it’s smooth, rounded housing comfortable in my hand when the saw was used upside down to cut to minimize tear out.

We found that on longer duration cuts the trigger dug into our finger slightly. We attributed this to sharp corners on the trigger edge. Adjusting the trigger finger alleviated this but hopefully Bosch will round off these edges.

Adding and changing blades on the Bosch JS470E jigsaw was super easy. Once the blade is inserted it does not move.

OVERALL IMPRESSION:

Because I’m used to using a different jigsaw the Bosch JS470E took awhile to grow on me.  Overall I was impressed by the JS470E, I found it to be an easy to operate, smooth cutting high-quality performance saw.The 7.0 –AMP motor is a plus for power and longevity and the blade changing system is tough to beat. This little jig saw has a lot to offer.
