Basement Makeover Using WoodHaven Planks

Armstrong Ceilings WoodHaven Plank Walls – Accent Walls

Nothing says “I’m a cool guy” like having your own personal billiard room. It makes you feel a little like James Bond (or maybe Goldfinger).

Personally, I like an industrial feel for a room for billiards — exposed brick, stone walls, and exposed ceiling joists – with a bit of coziness coming from a contrasting material like pre-finished beadboard wall planks. The appeal of using raw and unfinished materials side-by-side with finished materials is a great way to create a rugged style that still feels homey, and yet modern and masculine.

Industrial-Style Interior Space

We were recently asked to create a billiard room in an unfinished basement. When we began, this area felt like a dungeon – exposed steam pipes, an old defunct oil tank in one corner, two exposed brick over fieldstone walls, and open ceiling joists filled with pipes and wires.

Armstrong Ceilings WoodHaven Planks and Exposed Stone

We decided to leave the masonry walls and ceiling exposed to help create our “industrial look.”  We would then close off the room with two walls and finish them with Armstrong Ceilings WoodHaven beadboard planks installed in a horizontal orientation.

The overall finished look of this billiard room would be steampunk-inspired industrial.

Cleaning the Exposed Masonry

The decision to leave the masonry exposed was partially due to the fact that a huge steam pipe was running horizontally in front of it. Building a wall behind the pipe would have been weird, and a wall in front of the pipe would have closed in the room too much.

The brick over the fieldstone masonry wall was over one hundred years old and had mortar that needed to be replaced. We hired a mason to repoint the fieldstone and brick and then sand-blasted the stone to clean off paint and years of dirt and grime. While the cost was more than covering these walls with wall board, the visual result was fantastic, and requires no future maintenance.

Cost-Effective Accent Wall – WooHaven Beadboard

We framed the new walls with wall studs 12” on center and installed Armstrong Ceilings brand WoodHaven Beadboard Planks, model #1149.  The WoodHaven planks come prefinished and create a clean, classic look with no prep or painting required. This was also cheaper than hanging drywall or using a blue board, plaster, and paint. [there are five great finishes that can be applied to the walls] The WoodHaven planks installed in less than one day, compared with multiple days and tradespeople that would have been required otherwise.

Installing WoodHaven Planks

These WoodHaven planks measure 5” x 84” and can be installed in a variety of ways on ceilings or walls. We chose a horizontal orientation and used the wall hanging clips to install them. The clips ensure that nail holes are eliminated in the finished product. The WoodHaven planks come with clips and screws that are designed to use with wall studs or furring strips.

We finished the edges of the WoodHaven plank wall with vertical wood trim scribed to the masonry, and a baseboard at the floor.

Wood Style Tiles

On the concrete floor, we leveled uneven areas with a self-leveling pour mixture and applied 6” x 36” Legno Cenere Wood style tiles. We chose these tiles since they imitate the color of driftwood with a natural wood grain look.

Exposed Ceiling Joist – Ceiling

We kept the ceiling joist bays open and painted the joists, subfloor, water pipes and wires exposed flat black. The black color complements our industrial theme with the exposed masonry and also made the ceiling disappear. Most people who enter the room do not initially notice that the ceiling is not covered.

Flat Black Structural Elements – Painting

We used green paint to cover the trim picture framing the WoodHaven Plank wall, the door, a small bar window, and an exposed support column. We chose a shade of green that would match the felt top of the billiard table.

Steampunk-inspired Lighting

We added steampunk-inspired electrical fixtures with wire cages surrounding the antique bulbs, brass pipes, and gauges.

Exposed Masonry, and Woodhaven Accent Wall

Let’s Play Billiards!

From the rustic exposed masonry and flat black structural elements to steampunk-inspired lighting fixtures, there is no doubt that it will be a cool place to hang with friends and catch up while playing billiards.
