Anderson 10-Series Storm Door Installation

The Anderson 10-Series Fullview Retractable Storm Door is Anderson’s top-of-the-line storm door. I’ve been recommending and installing the 10-Series storm doors to clients for two reasons:

  1. Their a durable, quality storm door with a great seal
  2. They’re super easy to install

In this article, I’m installing an Anderson Fullview Retractable Screen Strom door and I wanted to show you just how easy it is, as well as a Pro Tip, for dealing with house trim that is 3/4″ thick.

Anderson Series-10 Storm Door Features

The door we installed has a few features worth looking closer at. Probably the best feature is a fully integrated and retractable insect screen and the second is the built-in dual closing system.

Retractable Insect Screen

This door has a built-in retractable screen that rolls up and out of the way when you want to use the storm panels. The upper glass panel has a handle that allows a one-handed pull that lowers the storm panel over the bottom panel and unwinds the screen.

SmoothControl™ Plus Close System

The Anderson 10-Series storm door has a built-in dual close system that they market as 50% stronger than the standard dual closers. It has an advanced two-part operation for a smoother close motion and a more consistent latch and a better weather seal. this closing system is easy to adjust the speed and helps resit “blow opens” on windy days.

Anderson Storm Door Colors

The finish on the doors is a high-quality powder coat. You can order these doors in 8 colors to match your house decor:

Built to Last

The extruded aluminum frame has reinforced metal corner brackets that help the corners stay square over time to help prevent the door from sagging.

Easy Installation

The door can be ordered three ways:

  1. Rapid Install 1: preassembled door
  2. Pro Install: Unassembled door, with longer z-bar that can be cut Assembly required.
  3. Rapid Install 2:   Universal handed [door swing]  Assembly required.

The easiest installation option is to order it preassembled. The door comes prehung, with special spacers that keep the door positioned in the opening.  This ensures that there is no cutting, minimal drilling, and virtually no measuring required. The entire install takes less than an hour.

Pro Tip – What to do with 3/4″ Door Casing

Storm doors like the Anderson 10-Series need to be installed on door casing that is 1″ thick. This is often referred to as 5/34″ causing. When the casing is less than 1-inch you need to build out the casing with strips or shims. If you don’t build out the 3/4″ casing the storm door flanges will not seat properly over the casing and cause fastening/installation issues.

I choose to use 1/4″ rips of PVC. I purchase 5/4″x4″- 8′ PVC and rip three strips at 1/4″.   Once I have the strips I fasten them with stainless steel siding nails to the trim, keeping the PVC flush with the door casing edge. This 1/4″ strip brings my 3/4″ casing out to 1-inch and allows the aluminum door flange to properly seat over the casing.

Overall Impression

As a remodeler and storm door installer, the Anderson 10-Series [Rapid Install] has saved me time, aggravation, and money.
