Adding Accent Lighting

Adding accent lighting to a room helps  illuminate the unique aspects of that room.  Aspects like crown  moldings, decorative columns, other architectural details, pictures, art pieces , and furniture.

An accent light is a softer light which often separates details or objects from their surroundings.  See photo on the right ~ the cathedral ceiling is separated from the screen walls and curtains below.

Some examples of accent lighting are:

  • Up lighting
  • Dedicated Art lights
  • Candlelight
  • Niche lighting
  • Lights on dimmer switches, such as a chandelier or wall sconce
  • Wall sconces
  • Lighting inside glass door cabinets

Adding ambient or accent lighting to a room really warms the room up.   There are many ways to do this and one of my favorite ways is with rope lighting behind crown molding.

By adding an open top molding, either with custom made or store bought crown molding you can create a really warm glow effect along ceiling lines.

Projects like this are relatively easy DIY projects.  Take a look at some of my past projects here for more details on doing this yourself:  How To Install Crown Molding With Rope Lighting  and here Designing With Rope Lighting

If you have the space consider this really cool lighting design as option.
