Choosing A Pergola

Complete The Backyard Experience With A PergolaChoosing A Pergola

Whether its for bringing friends together for a cookout, or creating a sanctuary for relaxing with a loved one, the architectural pergola truly creates the perfect backyard look. The pergola provides a central gathering place for parties and events, and it’s an elegant addition to any pool, fire pit, or outdoor kitchen.

A pergola creates a stylish, sophisticated extension of the home and serves as a way to capitalize the natural beauty of your property. Many design options are available, however, it may be difficult to choose a pergola that’s right for your outdoor space. Therefore, there are certain factors one should consider when making a decision.

The construction of the pergola must be strong enough to withstand the harsh outdoor elements while maintaining their structural integrity and form. The structure of the pergola is exposed to weathering of the finish, and unless professionally painting techniques are used, you might find yourself up on a ladder repainting the sun beaten structure more often than you would want to. The wind, rain and sun over time, and the pergolas’ ability to withstand weathering help to prove the adage ‘you get what you pay for’.

The strength in longevity of the chosen pergola serves as an investment for your property, but, as with anything, one must be careful and informed when investing. Pergolas that are both structurally sound and fade resistant are few and far between. Traditionally, pergola structures are constructed out of wood, but more recently pergolas are being made out of a solid cellular PVC material that have since been popularized due to their resistant properties against weathering. The highest quality cellular PVC provides the look and feel of painted wood, but unlike wood, this material will not rot, splinter, warp or peel. With cellular PVC material, it is important to seal the finish with a professionally applied adhesive and laminated paint from a trusted paint distributor, such as Sherwin-Williams. For instance, all PVC products that are painted by Walpole Outdoors, an industry leader in pergola manufacturing, are painted in a climate-controlled environment to ensure color uniformity and to prevent dinginess caused by dust or pollen absorption in open cells. A finish applied this way can be expected to come guaranteed for 25 years, allowing the owner more time of enjoyment and less time worrying about maintenance.

The pergola is as much of an addition to the owner’s yard as it is a statement about the home. The aesthetic elegance and sophistication of a quality pergola brings a newfound enjoyment of the outdoors. Hosting parties and grilling, pool days and late nights around the fire pit all pay tribute to this versatile garden structure.
