For the dads in this country, Father’s Day typically means ties and socks. Once every five years or so, we jump for joy when we see a box big enough to contain something we might actually need around the house. Unfortunately, the wrapping paper often hides within its cheery exterior a dog of a tool chosen by a well-meaning family who has never done more than watch us use tools.
This is the worst. Socks, ugly ties, even new boxer shorts – those are known quantities, and our efforts to mask our displeasure are practiced and precise. The cheapo knock-off tool or the “as seen on TV” gadget, though, is a different creature altogether.
Our falling-down-an-elevator shaft disappointment upon opening a big ol’ box of useless is countered somewhat by the enthusiasm the family obviously put into buying us something besides socks. Then we realize the wife and kids expect to see us actually make use of a tool we wouldn’t wish on our worst enemies.
